Educator FAQs

Educator FAQ & Classroom Integration

At Headwaters & Marine Stewards® (HMS), we believe accessing authentic field science shouldn’t require grant writing, IT department negotiations, or software training. We’ve designed our Ridge-to-Reef modules to be immediately deployable. Here is everything you need to know about bringing our field data into your classroom.

Development Status: 2027 Classroom Rollout

Headwaters & Marine Stewards is currently in active seasonal field capture and module development. The curriculum, digital labs, and teacher bundles described below are being engineered for our upcoming school year 2027 launch. This FAQ outlines the technical architecture, zero-login privacy standards, and operational guidelines that will govern the platform upon release.

Funding & Open-Access Model

Q: Why is everything 100% free? What’s the catch?

A: There is no catch, no trial period, and no paywall. We do not sell subscriptions, run commercial advertising, or harvest and monetize student data.

As a 501(c)(3) public charity, our charter is explicit: open-access coastal STEM education for every classroom. We are funded through community micro-grants, corporate matching, and institutional underwriting—where civic organizations and foundational partners sponsor specific digital modules. Their philanthropic support covers our research vessel, sensor builds, and cloud GIS hosting upfront so teachers and students never see an invoice.

We provide our digital labs, GIS models, and teacher bundles at zero cost because of three core operational commitments:

  • The Educational Equity Mission: Authentic coastal fieldwork shouldn’t be a luxury accessible only to well-funded private academies or university labs. Public school and homeschool science budgets are perpetually stretched thin; charging licensing fees or per-seat software costs directly locks out the classrooms that need open-access STEM materials most.
  • The “Lean Science” Cost Advantage: Traditional oceanographic institutions burn through massive budgets maintaining six-figure research vessels, proprietary software licenses, and $20,000 sensor packages. HMS operates on a “lean science” framework. By deploying a rugged, rotomolded HDPE skiff (R/V HMS Buttercup), open-architecture drop sondes (HPS Sculpin), and off-the-shelf aerial photogrammetry (sUAS Archimedes), our field operational expenses are measured in hundreds of dollars rather than tens of thousands.
  • Philanthropic & Community Underwriting: Headwaters & Marine Stewards is an independent 501(c)(3) public charity. Our cloud GIS infrastructure (Esri ArcGIS), vessel fuel, bench testing, and curriculum design are underwritten by individual micro-grants, corporate matching gifts (via Benevity, Goodstack, and YourCause), and civic foundation sponsorships.

Our donors fund the operational overhead upfront so that educators and students can focus entirely on the science without financial or administrative barriers.

Q: Will this remain free after the 2027 pilot season?

A: Yes. Open access is an institutional mandate written into our nonprofit charter. Once a lab module, digital twin, or “Green Box” DIY lab blueprint is built, bench-tested, and published, it remains permanently open-access and freely downloadable for the public education community.

Access & Approvals

Our fieldwork, cloud hosting, and curriculum development are completely underwritten by regional micro-grants, corporate matching, and community donors. There are no paywalls, trial periods, or premium tiers.

Q: Does our district need to sign a data agreement or formally approve this platform?A: In nearly all New Hampshire SAUs and Maine RSUs/districts, no formal board adoption or IT review is required. HMS modules are designed as open-access, supplementary learning aids aligned to state-adopted NGSS standards. Because our platform is 100% zero-login and collects zero student information, it is fully compliant with NH RSA 189:68-a, Maine Title 20-A § 951, and federal FERPA/COPPA requirements on day one. Teachers can integrate our data directly into existing lesson plans under standard classroom instructional discretion.

Q: Do I need district IT approval or a data privacy agreement to use this?A: No. Our architecture is entirely “zero-login.” Students never create accounts, log in, or input names, emails, or personal identifiers. Because absolutely no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is collected, stored, or transmitted, our modules fall completely outside the scope of strict student privacy laws (FERPA, COPPA, and SOPPA). You can drop a link into your lesson plan today without filing an IT ticket.

Technology & Devices

Q: Will these modules run on my students’ school-issued Chromebooks?A: Yes. The curriculum is entirely browser-based and optimized for standard classroom Chromebooks, iPads, and desktop computers. There is no software to download, no apps to install, and no plugins required.

Q: Will my school’s firewall block the content?A: It is highly unlikely. We host our interactive modules and digital twins on Esri’s ArcGIS StoryMaps infrastructure. Because Esri provides the ArcGIS for Schools Bundle nationwide, arcgis.com domains are already whitelisted on virtually every public school firewall and content filter (including GoGuardian, Securly, and Lightspeed) in the country.

Curriculum & Instruction

Q: How do I integrate the questions and assignments into Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology?A: We use an “air-gapped” LMS approach. You don’t need a tech administrator to set up LTI keys or roster syncing. The digital modules are shared via a simple web link. For student assessments, all investigation questions, data tables, and prompts are provided in our Educator Bundles as ready-to-copy text or printable PDFs. Simply paste the questions directly into your LMS assignment builder or run them as hard-copy handouts.

Q: Are the modules NGSS-aligned?A: Yes. All lab modules (such as Lake Thermal Stratification and Estuarine Haloclines) are mapped directly to Middle School and High School Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), specifically targeting Earth & Space Sciences (ESS) and Physical Sciences (PS).

Q: Does this use AI-generated or “canned” textbook data?A: Never. Every data point, aerial orthomosaic, and water chemistry metric in our modules is pulled directly from our local Great Bay watershed using our physical field fleet (the R/V HMS Buttercup, the sUAS Archimedes, and the HPS Sculpin). We believe students learn best when they can trace their data back to a real river, a real boat, and a real sensor.

Q: Do I need to buy expensive water testing equipment to do the physical labs?A: No. We know most schools don’t have $15,000 commercial sondes. Alongside our digital field data, we provide “Green Box” DIY lab blueprints. These allow you to run hands-on physical experiments—like modeling water clarity or thermal stratification—using ordinary $3–$5 hardware store materials rather than expensive vendor supply kits.

Q: Why use your custom aerial orthomosaics instead of Google Earth or public satellite imagery?

Feature Google Maps / Public Satellite HMS Purpose-Flown Imagery Classroom Impact
Spatial Resolution 1 to 15 meters per pixel.
Zooming in to creek scale results in blurred, pixelated blocks.
1 to 2 centimeters per pixel.
Sub-inch detail allows students to resolve individual culvert outfalls, peat slumps, and wrack lines.
Students measure real erosion rates and inspect physical infrastructure instead of guessing at blurry pixels.
Tidal Timing Random & Unpredictable.
Satellites pass on fixed orbital passes, often imaging estuaries at high tide where channels and flats are hidden.
Flown at Dead Low Tide.
Missions are timed strictly to peak low water (mean lower low water) to expose the entire intertidal zone.
Exposes undercut peat banks, living shoreline bio-engineering, sandbars, and eelgrass beds vital for the lab.
Ground Truthing 1 to 3+ Years Old.
Composed of mismatched, historical tiles that cannot capture recent storms or current watershed dynamics.
Same-Day Temporal Pairing.
Photogrammetry passes correspond directly with in-situ water chemistry logged by R/V HMS Buttercup.
Students correlate visible sediment plumes and stormwater runoff with real-time dissolved oxygen, salinity, and clarity data.
Atmospheric Clarity Haze, Glare & Clouds.
High-altitude orbital sensors frequently suffer from cloud cover, water surface reflection, and coastal haze.
Sub-Cloud Flight Operations.
Flown beneath the cloud deck at 50–100m AGL with polarized filters to eliminate water surface glare.
Delivers crisp, high-contrast water penetration to reveal shallow benthic features and outfall plumes on school screens.

Professional Development

Q: Do you offer professional development or training for science departments?

A: Yes, and like our curriculum, all educator workshops will be 100% free. We will offer compact 30-to-45-minute virtual walk-throughs for department meetings as well as in-person in-service workshops.
