From Learning to Leadership: Master the Ridge-to-Reef Framework
Welcome to the Academy. Here, we bridge the gap between scientific theory and field-ready action. Our self-paced modules are designed for concerned citizens, students, and professionals who want to move beyond awareness and into active mitigation.
The Goal: To build a trained workforce capable of collecting high-quality data and implementing nature-based solutions that protect our water from its source to the sea.
Choose Your Learning Track
1. Watershed Management & MS4 Compliance
Our curriculum is organized by the journey water takes through our landscape. You can dive into a specific topic or complete a full track to earn your HMS Steward Certification.
Track 1: Foundational Stewardship
Essential knowledge for every guardian of the watershed.
- The Ridge-to-Reef Connection: An introduction to watershed mechanics and why the Seacoast is a single, interconnected system.
- Environmental Ethics & Law: Understanding the Clean Water Act and your rights as a citizen scientist.
- Field Safety & Ethics: How to conduct monitoring without disturbing the very ecosystems you are protecting.
Track 2: Headwaters & Riparian Health
Protecting the source and the “living filters” of our rivers.
- Erosion Control & Soil Health: Identifying upstream stressors that lead to downstream siltation.
- The Riparian Buffer Masterclass: How to design, plant, and maintain “no-mow” zones that trap nutrients.
- Vernal Pool Monitoring: Identifying and protecting the seasonal nurseries of our forests.
Track 3: The Estuary & Marine Resilience
Protecting the Great Bay and the Atlantic Shoreline.
- The Nitrogen Protocol: (Featured Module) Master the identification and mitigation of nutrient loading.
- Living Shorelines: Using nature-based engineering to combat sea-level rise and marsh subsidence.
- Eelgrass & Oyster Restoration: Supporting the natural filtration systems of the estuary.
Track 4: The Technical Toolkit (Advanced)
Data collection protocols for high-level advocacy.
- Water Quality Instrumentation: Learn to use and calibrate pro-grade sensors for pH, DO, and Turbidity.
- GIS for Stewards: How to map your findings and visualize environmental changes over time.
- Grant Writing for Local Groups: How to find and win funding for your community’s restoration projects.
The HMS Steward Tiers
As you complete modules, you move through our stewardship tiers, unlocking more advanced tools and opportunities.
| Level | Requirement | Capabilities |
| Observer | 1 Foundational Module | Entry-level data reporting via the HMS App. |
| Technician | 2 Technical Modules | Eligible for field equipment loaner programs. |
| Certified Steward | Full Track Completion | Vetted to lead HMS-sanctioned community projects. |
| Strategic Partner | Professional Consulting | Direct collaboration with HMS on municipal contracts. |
Why Our Academy is Different
- Science-Backed: Every module is peer-reviewed and aligned with EPA and NHDES standards.
- Action-Oriented: We don’t just teach you why it’s happening; we teach you how to fix it.
- Consultancy-Integrated: The protocols you learn here are the same ones we use in our professional consulting practice.
Whether you are facing a nitrogen mandate, planning a living shoreline, or seeking to fund a large-scale restoration, let’s discuss a strategy that works for your unique landscape.
